Digital printing is one of the most common methods and all commercial printers use digital printing. This is due to the fact that these printers can print in different sizes and easily adapt to all needs, both at home and in the office. This technique is also used by printing companies to print posters or flyers. In this article, we tell you how this technique works and why it is used. We then compare this method to other printing methods.

How does digital printing work?

The printing process does not require the manufacture of printing plates, compared to other methods, which makes production start-up costs low. Digital printing is used to print a variety of surfaces such as paper or plastic. There are two types of digital printers. The first is the inkjet printer and the second is the laser printer.

The inkjet printer is mainly used to print large formats. Printing is done by depositing very small drops of ink, as thin as a hair, to ensure that the amount of ink deposited is just right. The inkjet printer prints in four colors, with CMYK colors, and the different colored inks are therefore mixed directly on the object to be printed. The process is not the most efficient for printing large quantities compared to other printing techniques.

Laser printing combines a laser mechanism with electromagnetism to create the print. The laser copies the design or image onto an electromagnetic web, and the toner is attached to this web via electrically charged particles. The toner is used only for this kind of printer. The problem with toner is that it cannot reproduce the image or colors as accurately as with inkjet printing. This is why inkjet printers are mainly used by printing companies. However, laser printing is much faster for printing large quantities.

The rollers in the printer slide the printed surface through the printer. After printing is done, the surface is heated and cooled. Finally, your paper is ready and you can simply retrieve it from the printer.

Why use digital printing?

Digital printing is mainly used to print paper and promotional paper items like flyers or paper cups. This technique is not really used to print other surfaces than paper, such as plastic, because the result would be inaccurate and of poor quality. As the start-up costs of digital printing are low, there are often no minimum print quantities required to start a print. This is why many industries are trying to adapt this printing technique to print their products.

Digital printing vs Offset printing

Both digital printing and offset printing are mainly used to print paper. As digital printing does not require the manufacture of printing plates, this method is ideal for printing in small quantities and quickly. Offset printing, on the other hand, requires the manufacture of printing plates and the start-up costs of production are higher. This is why this method is mainly used to print in large quantities. Offset printing can print in four colors or with Pantone colors, and can print on surfaces other than paper. Digital printing is therefore more limited because it can only print in four colors and paper surfaces. Are you interested in offset printing? Digital printing vs Pad printing

Digital printing and pad printing are two commonly used printing methods for printing in small quantities. What differentiates these two methods is the color system used and the printed surfaces. Digital printing can only be used to print CMYK colors and paper surfaces, while pad printing uses Pantone colors and prints concave surfaces, plastic, metal and other special surfaces. Digital printing vs Flexo printing

Digital printing and flexographic printing are very different. Digital printing is ideal for printing on paper and in small quantities quickly.Flexo printing can print more complex surfaces like plastic and metal and start-up costs are quite high. This is why flexo printing is recommended for printing in large quantities. Digital printing prints in four colors while flexo printing uses Pantone colors and more rarely CMYK colors. If you want to know more about flexo printing, you can read an article explaining how this technique works by clicking here.

Digital printing vs. Letterpress printing

Digital printing is one of the most modern printing technologies, while letterpress printing is the oldest method. Although they are both used to print paper surfaces, the printing technique is very different. Letterpress printing mainly uses Pantone colors and is a very manual and quite expensive printing technique. However, this technique adapts more easily than digital printing to different types of paper. Digital printing is faster and more efficient for printing small quantities of paper objects. Digital printing vs. Rotogravure printing

The difference between digital printing and rotogravure printing is that the former is ideal for printing in small quantities, and the latter only prints large volumes. This is due to the impression cylinders used for rotogravure printing, which can be used multiple times. Also, rotogravure printing uses Pantone colors, while digital printing prints in four colors. Finally, both of these methods print paper surfaces very well, and rotogravure printing is also used to print textiles and more luxurious and sensitive surfaces.
